The basics

What vinyl flooring actually is

Vinyl is a resilient PVC-based floor: a backing layer, a printed layer carrying the wood, marble or plain-colour design, and a clear wear layer on top. It is warmer and quieter than tile and far easier to wipe than carpet.

In Riyadh it is the go-to for refreshing a flat without breaking out old tiles, or for a spill-prone kitchen. Want real timber warmth in a bedroom? Compare our parquet and wood-look floors. Want softness underfoot? Look at carpet and rugs.

Sheet vinyl, SPC click or glue-down planks?

“Vinyl” covers several products; the right one depends on room size, subfloor and water exposure.

Sheet vinyl: almost no seams

Rolls are usually 2, 3 or 4 metres wide, so most rooms take one piece or very few joins — ideal for corridors, clinics and laundries.

It is fully glued; in healthcare settings seams can be heat-welded and edges coved up the wall for an easy-to-disinfect finish.

Water resistance

Where water-resistant vinyl earns its place

The surface doesn’t absorb water; performance in wet rooms comes down to sealed edges and a dry subfloor.

Kitchens

Water and cooking oil wipe straight off. We seal edges along cabinet plinths.

Guest bathrooms

Fine where floors dry between uses; open shower floors are still better tiled.

Laundries

Fully glued vinyl with an upturned edge keeps leaks off the concrete.

Wear layer, thickness and use class explained

The key number on a spec sheet is the clear wear layer, not overall thickness — it takes the abrasion. It typically runs from about 0.1 mm to 0.7 mm: thin is fine for a quiet bedroom, while shops and school corridors need noticeably more.

Many products also carry a use class: 2x is generally for homes, 3x for commercial spaces, and a higher second digit means heavier traffic. Overall thickness is about comfort — sheet is thin and slightly cushioned, click planks firmer, and some have an acoustic backing that the neighbours downstairs will appreciate.

Wood, stone or plain colour?

Oak and walnut looks lead in living rooms and bedrooms, stone effects suit kitchens and entrances, and solid colours suit clinics and gyms. For nurseries and playrooms there are bright designs with games and tracks printed in — browse examples in our flooring gallery.

Subfloor preparation decides how long vinyl lasts

Vinyl mirrors whatever lies beneath it, so at the inspection we check flatness, cracks, level changes and rising damp.

  • Levelling: dips are filled with self-levelling compound, or they telegraph through.
  • Moisture: new screed must dry; damp concrete leads to adhesive failure and stains.
  • Old tiles: usually fine to cover if solid, once grout lines are filled.
  • Doors: the extra layer may mean trimming a few doors.

Glue-down or floating?

Glue-down fixes the vinyl in adhesive so it handles castors and loads — standard for sheet and thin LVT. Floating installs click planks together over underlay, with an expansion gap behind the skirting.

Riyadh heat, sunlight and your floor

Vinyl expands in heat. Big south- or west-facing windows in summer can fade exposed areas or lift click planks fitted without room to move.

  • Shade large glazing with blinds or UV film.
  • Let planks acclimatise in the room first — usually a day or two.
  • Keep the A/C running rather than leaving a flat sealed and hot.
  • With underfloor heating, check the product’s temperature limit.

Indoor vinyl isn’t for open roofs and gardens — that is a job for artificial grass.

Comparison

Vinyl vs ceramic tile vs parquet

Tile shrugs off water but is cold, hard and messy to install. Vinyl is warmer, quieter and quicker, though less forgiving of sharp objects.

Parquet wins on warmth in the majlis (the formal sitting room of a Saudi home) and bedrooms, but most HDF boards dislike standing water. Many homes mix them: parquet in living spaces, vinyl in kitchen and laundry.

Care

Looking after vinyl — and what to avoid

Daily

Vacuum or sweep — fine Riyadh dust acts like sandpaper under shoes.

Weekly

Damp mop with a pH-neutral cleaner; never flood click-plank joints.

Avoid

Steam mops, harsh solvents and abrasive pads.

Furniture

Felt pads on chair legs; lift, don’t drag.

Mats

Use door mats, but not rubber-backed ones that can stain.

Repairs

Keep offcuts from your batch for future plank swaps or patches.

Vinyl flooring in Riyadh: your questions answered

How much does vinyl flooring cost per square metre in Riyadh?

It depends on the type, wear layer, total area and how much levelling the subfloor needs, so we price your actual job rather than quote a generic figure. Send room sizes and photos on WhatsApp, or book a free inspection in Riyadh, for a clear quote in SAR.

Can vinyl be laid over existing ceramic tiles?

Often, yes, if the tiles are firmly bonded. SPC click planks tolerate grout lines best; sheet and glue-down vinyl need the lines filled or skimmed first, or the tile pattern shows through. We also check door clearances and threshold heights before confirming anything.

Is vinyl a good idea for bathrooms?

It suits guest WCs and bathrooms where water doesn’t sit, ideally sheet vinyl with sealed edges. Walk-in shower floors that stay wet are still better tiled, and many homes simply combine the two in the same room — tile inside the shower zone, vinyl everywhere else.

What is the difference between SPC and LVT?

LVT is the umbrella term for vinyl planks and tiles that imitate wood or stone, either glued down or clicked. SPC is a type of click plank with a rigid stone-powder core, so it stays steadier over subfloor flaws and temperature swings. Flexible glue-down LVT is thinner and suits shops.

How long does a vinyl installation take?

It depends on area, room count and subfloor condition. Clicking planks into a flat room is relatively quick; levelling compound must dry before gluing. After the inspection we explain the plan and schedule around your home or business hours, then tidy up when the job is done.

Will Riyadh’s summer heat damage vinyl?

Vinyl moves with temperature, and strong sun through glass can cause fading or plank movement over time. Leave the right expansion gap, let planks acclimatise first, shade sun-facing windows and keep the air-conditioning running normally — even in a flat left empty over summer.

Is vinyl suitable for children’s rooms and nurseries?

It is practical: warmer and softer than tile and easy to wipe after spills and crafts. Pick a matt, slip-resistant finish, ask about the product’s emissions data, and add a soft rug where children play. Unlike textile floors, it doesn’t hold onto dust.

What wear layer do I need for a shop or office?

Commercial spaces generally need a thicker wear layer and a 3x use class. Busy shops with trolleys do best with glue-down LVT or fully adhered sheet vinyl; quieter offices can often use a lighter spec. We recommend once we know your footfall.
