Grass for balconies and terraces

Artificial Grass for Balconies in Riyadh: A Green Balcony Done Properly

In a small apartment a balcony can change from a neglected corner into a green seating nook, but a balcony is not a garden: it has its own drainage, load limits, neighbours and building rules. This page explains how we fit artificial grass on balconies in Riyadh, which pile height suits, and how we protect drainage and safety, after a free site visit where we measure and explain what suits your particular balcony.

What makes balconies special

Six issues that separate a balcony from a garden

Before choosing colour and pile height, note these points that many households overlook and then pay for later.

Drainage

A balcony has small drains that handle rain and washing water. The grass must not block them or hold back the flow, so we leave open paths around them and check them before fitting.

Weight

Artificial grass is relatively light compared with hard floors, but planters and heavy furniture can add load. Ask an engineer if the balcony is an old cantilever or shows damage.

Heat and sun

West-facing balconies get strong afternoon sun and the grass will heat up. We suggest shade, a suitable pile height and a colour that will not fade quickly.

Safety at the rail

Do not place anything that helps children climb to the railing, and make sure the grass is secure so it does not shift at the edges or the door.

Building rules

Some managers or owners require approval for changes to a balcony’s look, so check with the owner before starting if the flat is in a shared building.

Removal later

If the flat is rented, choose a fixing method that leaves no lasting damage to the floor, and we explain the possible methods during the visit.

Choosing the grass

Which grass suits a balcony?

The aim of balcony grass is a comfortable green look, a surface to walk on barefoot, easy cleaning and good drainage, not to imitate a full garden. So the considerations differ from garden grass for villa gardens.

Pile height

Short to medium pile is usually best on balconies: it is easier to clean of dust and fallen leaves, it keeps the floor height low at the balcony door, and it drains faster. Taller pile looks luxurious but holds dust and needs more brushing, and you will find more in our artificial grass heights guide.

Colour and look

Natural multi-tone shades hide dust and look more realistic than a bright uniform green, which suits those overlooking neighbours and the city skyline. Ask for a sample and view it in your balcony’s light in the morning and afternoon.

Backing and drainage

Ask about a perforated backing that lets water through, which is an important condition here. Grass that traps water beneath it causes dampness and odours and can harm the floor.

Seating

If you want chairs and a small table, choose grass that stays put underfoot and does not distort under furniture, and add small protectors under the legs. For open roof areas see rooftop and terrace artificial grass.

The work

How we fit grass on a balcony step by step

  1. Visit and measure

We measure the balcony, check the floor, drains, doors and railings, and ask how you use the space.

  2. Clean and check drainage

We clean the floor, make sure the drains work and are not blocked, and treat any cracks or ponding areas.

  3. Prepare the base

We add a drainage layer or suitable separator if needed and make sure the surface is flat so the grass sits without rippling.

  4. Cut and fix

We cut the grass to shape, mark openings for drains and posts, then fix it in a way suited to the floor and to your status as owner or tenant.

  5. Finish and handover

We treat the edges, brush the pile, clean up and explain how to care for it.

Safety and precautions

Things to watch on balconies

These are points we raise with every customer, because a balcony is high up and open.

Barbecues and flames

Synthetic fibres can melt or burn with embers and sparks, so never place a grill or direct flame on or near the grass.

Falls and children

Keep the grass secure at doors, avoid adding anything that encourages climbing, and always supervise children in elevated places.

Water and neighbours

Water must not trouble neighbours below, so drainage must be sound first. When rinsing, use little water.

Cost

What decides the cost of balcony grass?

We do not publish a fixed price because every balcony differs in size, shape and preparation, but the factors are clear: grass quality and pile height, balcony area and the number of corners and cuts, the condition of the floor and whether it needs treatment, any extra drainage layer, and the fixing method. On small areas, cutting and finishing weigh more in the calculation than the price per square metre.

To compare quotes, ask for them item by item: grass type, pile height, backing, fixing, drainage, and any warranty clearly written with its duration. You can learn pricing basics on artificial grass prices in Riyadh. If you have more than one balcony or terrace, mention it when asking so we can plan the work as one job.

Cases

Three cases we meet in Riyadh apartments

A new flat with an unfinished balcony

The floor is sometimes rough concrete, so we may need to smooth it or add a separator under the grass so the fibres are not damaged. It is a good chance to set falls towards the drains before fitting, avoiding ponding from the start.

A balcony with old tiles

Fitting over sound tiles is possible after cleaning and checking the joints. Loose or cracked tiles must be repaired first, because grass does not hide problems underneath and may trap moisture above them.

A shared terrace or one attached to the majlis

The balcony is used more heavily here, so we lean towards denser grass and firmer fixing, and consider light paths of tile or timber alongside the grass. It helps to read Arabic majlis flooring if the balcony extends a majlis.

Each case has its details, so we do not promise a single solution, but recommend after the visit what suits your area and how you use it.

Care

Keeping balcony grass clean and green

Dust is the number one enemy of any balcony in Riyadh, and it settles between the fibres and dulls the colour. Clear leaves and dust with a soft broom or brush roughly weekly, brush the pile lightly so it stands up again, and rinse the surface with a little water from time to time, making sure the drains work.

If you place planters, use trays under them so soil and irrigation water do not seep into the fibres, and lift furniture rather than dragging it across the grass. In the heat of summer, a light shade over the balcony protects the colour and makes sitting more comfortable. If you notice a raised edge or a shifting piece, contact us early, because repairing it is simple at the start.

Balcony artificial grass: common questions

Can artificial grass be fitted on an apartment balcony?

In most cases yes, provided drainage, weight and building rules are respected. We check the balcony at the visit and confirm whether it can be done and how.

What pile height suits a balcony best?

Usually short to medium pile, which is easier to clean and drain and keeps floor height low at the door. We decide after seeing the space.

Will the grass block the balcony drains?

It must not. We leave an open path around the drains and cut the grass so water can flow, and we check drainage before handover.

Will fixing damage the floor of a rented flat?

We choose a fixing method that suits the floor and your tenant status as far as possible and discuss options at the visit, since some are removable and some permanent.

Does the grass get hot on a sun-facing balcony?

It can in the afternoon on balconies with direct sun, so we advise shade, a suitable colour and material, and using the space at cooler times.

Can I put a barbecue on the grass?

We do not advise it, since embers and sparks can damage or ignite the grass. A grill needs a place away from synthetic fibres and protected from them.

How long does installation take?

A medium balcony is usually done in about a day after preparation, and may take longer depending on the floor and the cutting. We state the duration after the visit.

How do I get a quote?

Message us on WhatsApp or call with photos and measurements of the balcony. We arrange a free visit in Riyadh and send a written quote after measuring.

Does the grass affect dampness underneath on a balcony?

It can trap water if the backing is not perforated or drainage is not prepared. We choose a backing that lets water through and check falls and drains before fitting.

Can I put heavy furniture on balcony grass?

Yes with protectors under the legs and spread load, avoiding dragging furniture on the grass. Check that the balcony can carry the total load, and ask a specialist if the building is old.
