Terminology

Why do parquet and laminate get confused?

In the local market several types are sold as parquet, so a customer may compare two prices for completely different products without knowing it. Knowing the terms protects you from that.

Laminate

A board made of a pressed HDF core, a printed wood-look decor layer and a clear wear layer on top. It is the most common kind of parquet found in homes.

Natural wood parquet

Has real wood on the surface, either full planks or a wood layer over a made-up core. Its look and feel are natural, but prices and care differ.

HDF core

Compressed high density wood fibre. It gives the board stability and firmness but is affected by standing water, especially at the edges.

Wear layer

The clear top layer that protects the pattern from scratches and abrasion. Its strength is expressed in ratings set out by the maker and depends on the type of use.

Floating installation

Boards click together and lay over an underlay without being glued to the floor, the usual method for laminate. See parquet installation in Riyadh.

The trade name

Parquet is often used loosely to mean laminate, so always ask: what is the surface material, what is the core, and what are the thickness and rating?

Layers and durability

How does board construction affect durability and moisture?

The biggest difference between the two lies beneath the surface, which is why we advise understanding the layers before comparing prices.

Scratching and abrasion

Laminate with a good wear layer resists everyday light scratches from feet and chairs and suits domestic use. Natural wood can show scratches depending on the species and its protective finish, and some types can be renewed.

Moisture and water

Traditional laminate does not like standing water, as the core can swell at the edges if water gets in. Natural wood reacts to both humidity and dryness by expanding and contracting. For that reason we recommend neither in bathrooms, and for wet areas we suggest water-resistant vinyl. See waterproof flooring.

Sound and feel underfoot

The underlay gives a quieter feel and softens the echo of footsteps, whether the parquet is laminate or wood. Our underlay guide explains the types.

Repair and renewal

A damaged laminate board can be replaced on its own if the same type is available, but it cannot be sanded and refinished. Some natural wood parquet can be sanded and refinished once or more depending on the thickness of the wood layer, and we confirm this once we know the type.

Appearance and surface feel

Modern printing in laminate imitates wood grain very closely, and some embossed surfaces feel close to wood to the touch. Natural wood still differs in colour variation and the unique grain of each board, so no two boards are exactly alike. Choose by what matters to you: a consistent look or the character of real wood.

Lifespan and what affects it

We do not promise a set period because real lifespan depends on product quality, fitting, traffic, care and humidity. A floor fitted on a well-prepared base and looked after carefully gives the best result in any type, and skipping preparation is the most common cause of early problems.

Six questions to ask any parquet supplier

These questions reveal what the product really is and make comparing quotes fair. Ask for the answers in writing in the quotation.

What is the surface material?

Is it a printed decor layer or real wood? This is the biggest difference between two quotes.

What is the core and its thickness?

HDF or something else, and the board thickness in millimetres, as they affect stability and sound.

What is the wear rating?

This tells you whether the board suits home or commercial use according to the maker's data.

Does the price include underlay and skirting?

Some quotes show the board price only and add other items later.

How are expansion gaps and thresholds handled?

Good finishing at doors and walls protects the floor and improves the look.

What preparation is needed?

Levelling, removing an old floor or a moisture check, and whether it is included or separate.

Where does each suit?

Examples of parquet in different rooms

Living room with light parquet

Living rooms

Wide boards in calm colours give a sense of space here, and a good underlay softens the noise.

Lounge with dark chevron pattern

Special patterns

Patterns such as chevron and herringbone need precision in laying; see herringbone parquet.

Office with a glass hall and parquet floor

Offices and showrooms

Commercial spaces need a higher wear rating according to foot traffic, and we advise on that.

Price factors

What decides the price of parquet and laminate?

We do not quote fixed figures here because prices change with type, quantity and site, but these are the factors that move them.

Board type and specification

Thickness, rating, surface material, origin and the look of the pattern all set the price tier.

Condition of the floor

A level, dry floor needs less work than one that needs levelling or an old floor removed.

Pattern and laying method

Straight laying is faster than herringbone and chevron, and waste is higher in patterns.

Accessories

Underlay, skirting, profiles and cutting doors add items that should appear in the quotation.

How to choose

Five steps to an informed choice

  1. Define the use

Home or office, foot traffic, furniture, children and pets.

  2. Ask about construction

Surface material, core material, board thickness and wear rating.

  3. Compare real samples

See samples in the light of your room and test the feel and colour.

  4. Calculate the total

Floor plus underlay, skirting, profiles and preparation work.

  5. Book a visit

We check the current floor and moisture and confirm what suits you.

Common mistakes

Mistakes made when comparing types

These are points we repeat with customers, and avoiding them saves problems after fitting.

Comparing by price only

Two prices for products that differ in thickness, core and rating cannot be compared. Ask for written specifications before comparing.

Ignoring the floor beneath

Any wood-based floor needs a level, dry base. Preparation is part of a successful job, not an extra cost. See floor preparation and levelling.

Using it in wet areas

Bathrooms and kitchens exposed to water need a water-resistant floor, not parquet. Read kitchen and bathroom vinyl.

Riyadh climate

Air conditioning and dryness: what it means for parquet

Riyadh is dry on most days and air conditioners run for long periods, which makes steady indoor humidity important for any wood-based floor. Leaving an expansion gap at the walls and not keeping rooms shut for long periods without cooling reduces expansion and shrinkage problems.

In new villas, or after plastering and painting, the floor must dry completely before laying. We measure this during the visit before fixing a fitting date. A summary of the climate points is in our best flooring for Riyadh climate guide.

  • An expansion gap at walls and under doors
  • A dry floor confirmed by testing, not guesswork

Summary

When do you lean towards each option?

Lean towards laminate if

Lean towards natural wood if

The feel of real wood is the priority and you accept special care and a higher cost depending on the type.

Common questions on parquet vs laminate

Is parquet the same as laminate?

In many people's speech yes, as the word parquet is also used for laminate. But natural wood parquet differs in surface, cost and care, so ask about the surface and core before deciding. We recommend recording specifications in the quotation so the agreement is clear.

Which resists scratches better?

Laminate with a suitable wear rating resists everyday scratches well. Natural wood varies with the species and protective layer, and what matters is matching the rating to the use. For busy commercial places we suggest a higher rating.

Does laminate tolerate moisture?

It handles normal air humidity well, but it dislikes standing water, as it can swell at the edges. We do not recommend it in bathrooms.

Can laminate be sanded?

No. The surface is a thin printed layer. A damaged board is replaced when the same type is available. Some natural wood types can be sanded, depending on the thickness of the wood layer.

Which is easier to fit?

Floating click laminate is usually quickest and needs no glue. Other wood floors may need gluing or fixing depending on the product. We decide after the visit, and good floor preparation matters more than fitting speed.

Do I need an underlay beneath parquet?

In most cases yes, as it softens sound and, depending on type, protects against floor moisture. See the underlay guide on our site.

How do I clean parquet and laminate?

With a dry or slightly damp mop or vacuum, avoiding heavy water and strong cleaners, and following the manufacturer's guidance.

Is it suitable for new villas?

Yes once the plaster is dry and moisture and levelness are confirmed. We measure these during the visit and advise waiting if needed.

Do you offer a free site visit?

Yes inside Riyadh. We measure rooms, check the floor, show samples and then send a quote by phone or WhatsApp.
