Floor underlay for parquet and vinyl
Underlay types (foam, cork, moisture membrane) and when you need one before laying parquet or vinyl.
We supply and fit laminate flooring for apartments, villas and offices, and help you decode the spec sheet before you buy rather than after. Book a free inspection with samples anywhere in Riyadh and get your quote by phone or WhatsApp.

Our main parquet flooring in Riyadh page covers types and patterns. This one zooms in on laminate, because two boards in the same oak shade can differ a lot in noise, lifespan and how they cope with a busy household — and most of that is printed on the box.
Check the thickness in millimetres, the AC rating, the two-digit use class, the edge profile and the coverage per pack. We compare those numbers with you at the inspection, before anyone talks about shades.

Laminate is a pressed sandwich of four layers, and each explains something about how your floor behaves.
A tough, resin-soaked overlay, usually reinforced with aluminium oxide particles, gives laminate its scratch and fade resistance. Its quality is what the AC rating measures. The pack also shows a two-digit use class: 2x is domestic, 3x commercial, and the second digit rises with traffic — so 32 is moderate commercial.
A high-resolution photo of wood grain. Better boards use more variations, so the same plank doesn’t repeat side by side.
Compressed high-density fibreboard carries the click joint and decides how stable the board is. A denser, better-treated core is far less likely to swell at the edges after a brief spill.
A backing sheet that stops the board cupping. If underlay comes pre-attached, we only add extra foam where the spec allows it.
| 8 mm | 10 mm | 12 mm | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Footstep sound | More noticeable; relies on good underlay | Quieter in most rooms | Most solid and quiet underfoot |
| Minor subfloor dips | Least forgiving | Moderate | Most forgiving of slight undulation |
| Doors and thresholds | Rarely need trimming | Some may need a small trim | Doors often need trimming |
| Typical use | Bedrooms, rental flats | Living rooms, most villa rooms | Large lounges, majlis rooms, offices |
Quoted thickness normally excludes underlay. We measure door clearances at the inspection before recommending one.
Edge profile and surface texture change the whole look of the floor — and how easy it is to keep clean.
A small chamfer on each edge outlines every board, so the floor reads more like timber and slight height differences disappear. The trade-off: fine Riyadh dust settles in the grooves.

Boards meet flush with no bevel, so the floor looks like one calm plane. It suits small rooms and minimal interiors and is the quickest to mop.

On some boards the texture is embossed to follow the printed grain, so the floor feels like timber under your hand. That texture also hides fine scratches and footprints better than a smooth face.

Some boards have water-repellent edges and survive a spill for a few hours. That does not make them waterproof: joints stay the weak point, and water that reaches the core causes swelling that never goes back down.
So we recommend laminate for dry rooms and suggest waterproof flooring such as SPC planks in a matching tone for kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms, so the home still flows.

| HDF laminate | SPC vinyl | Engineered wood | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scratch resistance | Very high | Good, depends on wear layer | Lower — the surface is real wood |
| Water | Dry rooms only | Copes with kitchens and bathrooms | Needs the same care as laminate |
| Feel and sound | Solid and warm with good underlay | Slightly cooler, quieter | Closest to natural timber |
| Best for | Bedrooms, lounges, offices | Kitchens, rental flats | Prestige majlis rooms |
Weighing up tiles too? See vinyl vs parquet vs tiles.
Over tiles or screed we lay a damp-proof membrane and foam; in apartments, a denser acoustic underlay so neighbours below hear less. Thin, cheap underlay is the usual cause of a hollow, clicky sound underfoot.
Click joints give a glue-free floating floor but must be angled in properly; hammering the edge breaks the tongue and opens gaps weeks later. Long open-plan runs often need an expansion break, usually at doorways — see our parquet installation page.

Enter length and width. Pick 10% for a standard straight lay; we convert square metres into boxes on your quote.
Not necessarily. A thicker board is quieter and hides small dips, but it may mean trimming doors and raising thresholds. An 8 mm board with a dense core on good underlay can beat a thicker board with a weak core, so we compare samples against your door heights at the visit.
Laminate is a printed wood image on an HDF core under a hard wear layer; engineered and solid floors have a real timber surface. Laminate resists scratches better and usually costs less but cannot be sanded. Real wood feels warmer and reacts more to Riyadh’s dry air.
Cautiously, if the kitchen is lightly used and spills are wiped at once — the strip by the sink and fridge is the risky part. Often the practical answer is SPC in the kitchen in a matching shade, joined to the lounge laminate with a neat threshold profile.
Choose a higher commercial use class and AC rating, and put clear mats under every castor chair — hard wheels press on board edges and leave marks over time. In larger offices we often pair laminate in meeting rooms with carpet tiles in the work zones.
Usually an uneven slab, an underlay that is too thin, or boards not fully locked. It also happens when the expansion gap has closed and boards rub against the wall. Checking flatness before laying and choosing the right underlay prevents most of it.
We normally add around 10% for a straight lay, so roughly 22 m², then divide by the coverage printed on the box and round up. Rooms with many corners need a little more. Keep one spare box so a damaged board can later be swapped with a perfect match.
Start by finding the cause, since moisture or a water leak is among the most common, and replacing a board without treating the source repeats the problem. We inspect the floor and decide whether one board or several need replacing; details are on our parquet repair and maintenance page.
Send us room sizes plus a photo of the current floor and doors, and we will bring laminate samples in different thicknesses and edges to a free visit in Riyadh.
