Covering the expansion gap
Most hard floors need a gap at the wall for movement, and the skirting covers it and hides the edge.
A good floor can be spoilt by an untidy edge, a skirting that does not suit the wall or a raised threshold at a door. Skirting, transition strips and thresholds are not minor extras: they cover the expansion gap, protect edges, prevent tripping and give a finished look. We explain the types, where they are used and how we choose what suits your floor. Free inspection in Riyadh.

These pieces are chosen with the floor, not afterwards. For the full laying steps see parquet installation in Riyadh or vinyl installation in Riyadh.
Most hard floors need a gap at the wall for movement, and the skirting covers it and hides the edge.
Skirting protects the foot of the wall from chairs, vacuum cleaners and mop water.
At a door the level or the type of floor may change, and a transition strip makes crossing safe.
A raised edge left untreated causes trips, and a suitable threshold makes movement easy.
An exposed edge can chip or lift, and an edge strip protects it.
Skirting and door thresholds of a suitable colour and height give the room a complete look.
Materials and profiles vary, and what suits depends on the floor and the room.
| Piece | Where used | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Wood or painted MDF skirting | Round rooms with parquet and vinyl | Chosen by height and profile, and avoided in very wet rooms |
| PVC skirting | Bathrooms, kitchens and wet rooms | Handles moisture well |
| Aluminium threshold | At doors and between two different floors | Takes traffic and protects the edge |
| Transition strip | Between two levels or two floor types | Makes the change smooth |
| Stair nosing | Stair edges | Reduces slipping and protects the edge, with details in stair carpet |
We choose the piece according to the floor manufacturer’s guidance and the place of use, and confirm availability and size on inspection.
We start with the floor, the wall and the door, then decide the piece. For a general comparison of floors read vinyl, parquet or tiles?.
Many people think skirting is bought at the last minute and fixed any old way, but it is part of the floor’s design. Height, colour and fixing method all affect the look and the durability of the job.
A taller skirting gives a richer look and suits large rooms and high ceilings, while moderate heights suit small rooms. It can match the floor, the doors or the wall depending on the style. In kitchens and bathrooms we prefer a material that handles moisture.
Walls in many homes are not perfectly straight, and a gap can show between skirting and wall. We deal with it by scribing the skirting and using filler or sealant where needed, which gives a clean line.
At a door we compare the level of the new floor with the neighbouring one and choose a threshold to suit the difference. We also check that the door can still open easily, and in some cases the door may need trimming at the bottom.
Floating parquet and vinyl need skirting that covers the expansion gap without pressing on the floor. With carpet a skirting or an edge strip may be used depending on how it is fixed, and the details are in carpet installation in Riyadh.
Skirting is fixed with adhesive or nails depending on the material and the wall, taking care not to fix it to a floating floor itself so its movement is not blocked. Nail heads are covered and joints filled in a matching colour.

A skirting in a colour that matches the parquet gives a clean boundary between floor and wall.

A skirting in the wall colour gives a minimalist, tidy look.

Wipe skirting with a slightly damp cloth and a mild cleaner, and do not leave it wet. Avoid abrasive cleaners that remove the paint, and take care with the vacuum cleaner and mop not to knock the edges.
If you see a skirting pulling away or a threshold lifting, deal with it early to prevent damage to the floor and water getting behind it. For parquet care in general see parquet maintenance and repair.
