Old adhesive
With glued carpet the adhesive stays on the floor and hardens over time. Removing it needs careful scraping so it does not show through the new floor as bumps or odour.
Before your new floor goes down, the old carpet has to come out the right way, without leaving lumps of adhesive, tacks or dust that spoil the new fitting. This page explains how old carpet is lifted, what we usually find underneath, and how we prepare the floor afterwards for parquet, vinyl or new carpet, with a free site visit in Riyadh where we define what your location specifically needs.

Nobody knows exactly what is under a carpet until it is lifted, but experience gives a reasonable picture of the possibilities.
With glued carpet the adhesive stays on the floor and hardens over time. Removing it needs careful scraping so it does not show through the new floor as bumps or odour.
Stretched carpet is fixed with timber strips and nails around the wall. We remove them carefully so the floor and skirting are not damaged.
The underlay layer can crumble with age and cannot be reused. We lift it entirely and sweep up the residue.
Old stains or traces of leaks may appear, and we need to check the floor beneath for dampness before any new fitting.
Carpet hides many flaws, and when it is lifted low spots or roughness appear that need treatment.
In many homes there is sound tile or screed under the carpet, which saves the customer extra work.
Lifting is not just pulling the carpet from a corner. There is an order that reduces dust and damage and protects the floor, skirting and doors. Here is what we normally do as part of floor preparation before a new installation.
We start by moving light furniture and covering what stays, and by fixing a route for removing waste so we do not soil the rest of the house. We also check doors and fixed cabinets that may need trimming or protection.
We cut the carpet into manageable strips instead of lifting it as one heavy piece, which reduces dust and gives control. Then we lift the foam underlay and clear the floor of remaining pieces.
If the carpet was glued we scrape the adhesive with tools suited to the floor beneath, and if it was held by strips we pull them and fill the resulting holes where needed. The aim is a clean, stable surface on which preparation can be built.
We vacuum thoroughly because the fine dust under carpet is considerable, then inspect flatness, moisture and cracks. This inspection decides whether the floor needs levelling compound or treatment before the new floor, as detailed in floor preparation and levelling.
| Lifting method | Floor after lifting | |
|---|---|---|
| Carpet glued directly | Cut and pull in strips, scrape the adhesive | May need smoothing or levelling |
| Carpet stretched on strips | Remove strips and nails, lift underlay | Small holes at the edges |
| Carpet over foam underlay | Lift underlay entirely, clean residue | A surface close to the original floor |
| Old carpet on stairs | Careful hand work, protect the edges | Edges may need treatment |
| Carpet tiles | Lift the tiles, remove adhesive | Adhesive traces may need scraping |
Send photos of the carpet and room on WhatsApp and we will arrange a visit in Riyadh to define the lifting and preparation.
Examples from our work and showroom of floors before and after preparation.

Corridors and stairs are among the hardest places to lift because of edges and corners.

After lifting the carpet and preparing the floor, parquet can be laid faster and at higher quality.

Vinyl is a common choice after carpet and needs a clean, level surface.
We check the fixing type and estimate quantities, difficulties and how the waste leaves.
We cover doors and furniture and set the removal route to limit dust in the house.
We cut the carpet into strips and lift it with the underlay carefully so the floor is not damaged.
We remove adhesive, nails and strips and vacuum thoroughly.
We check flatness and moisture and decide what treatment is needed before the new floor.
It may look like a saving but it raises the floor, traps dust and moisture and affects the stability of the new floor, especially floating boards.
Lumpy adhesive shows as bumps under planks and causes noises or swelling in the new floor.
If signs of damp appear after lifting, the source must be treated before any new fitting.
Small dips turn into voids under rigid planks, so we give levelling its time before laying.
Old carpet can hold a lot of dust, so we limit its spread by cutting into strips and vacuuming repeatedly. If someone at home is sensitive, tell us so we can organise the work.
Edges and corners need careful hand work so steps or skirting are not damaged, and some may need repair before the new finish.
We agree before starting what stays in place, because the floor under cabinets is not normally prepared, and we consider its height when choosing the new floor.
Carpet and underlay are bulky, so we agree in advance on how they are removed and disposed of in the quote rather than surprises on the day.
After the carpet is lifted you have several options, each with its requirements. If you choose vinyl, a flat, clean floor is essential for the click to work; if you choose parquet, moisture and flatness matter most; and if you want new carpet you can use the clean surface for a better fit, see carpet installation.
Sometimes a good original tile floor appears after lifting and saves you a lot of work, so you can lay vinyl straight away after treating the joints, or leave the tile visible and add rugs. If the floor is damaged we recommend a levelling compound and a moisture barrier depending on the case, and you will find option details in best flooring for Riyadh’s climate and vinyl vs parquet vs tiles.
We do not give a fixed figure because the job differs from site to site, but the factors are known: the area, how the carpet was fixed, the amount of adhesive left, whether it is on stairs or corridors, how hard it is to carry the waste out, and the condition of the floor after lifting and whether it needs treatment. A medium room with stretched carpet is much quicker than a full lounge of glued carpet on a rough floor.
That is why we prefer to inspect the site before pricing and to write in the quote what is included item by item: lifting, underlay, scraping, cleaning, removal and floor treatment if needed. You will find details on quantities and measuring in how to measure for flooring. If the work is part of a larger project see villa and apartment flooring.
You can make the work easier with simple steps: clear the room of small items and light furniture, move valuables away, close doors between carpeted and bare areas, and tell us where cables and sockets are and which cabinets are fixed. If you have a rug you want to keep, move it beforehand.
Expect some dust despite every precaution, so close and cover air-conditioning vents in the room during the work and let the air conditioning run afterwards to clear the air. Do not be surprised if old stains or slight differences appear on the floor after lifting, as that is normal and we deal with it within preparation. Just tell the team anything that matters to you, because planning ahead saves time.
Enter the length and width of the space to see the approximate area, then send it on WhatsApp with photos of the old carpet so we can estimate the job.

Damage can be reduced with suitable tools and methods, but strong adhesive may leave marks that need treatment. We inspect the floor after lifting and treat what is needed before the new floor.

Not necessarily, as we work room by room and close doors to limit dust. For larger jobs or if children or sensitive people are at home it is better to arrange suitable times out, and we agree this beforehand.
