Renewal without the heavy disruption

Renovating Old Floors in Riyadh: Options That Transform a Space

Floors wear out: cracked tiles, faded parquet, stained carpet or a surface that is no longer level. That does not always mean a full tear-out. We inspect your current floor on a free visit in Riyadh and suggest the least disruptive option that fits how you use the space.

The options

What are the ways to renew an old floor?

The right route depends on the existing floor and on what you want from it. We set out each approach and its limits, and you can read the details of base work in floor preparation and levelling.

Vinyl over tiles

If the tiles are firm and level they can be covered after the joints are treated, saving demolition, dust and time. See fitting over tiles.

Floating parquet or laminate

Planks laid on an underlay over a sound floor change a room quickly. Read about laminate flooring.

New carpet in place of old

We remove the old carpet, clean the base and lay new carpet; the removal side is in old carpet removal.

Full replacement

Where there is damp, settlement or loose tiles we lift the old floor and start from a sound base.

Partial updates

Sometimes renewing just the corridor, hall or one room fits the budget better than the whole home.

How we decide

What we check before choosing how to renew

Before suggesting any material we ask whether the existing floor can serve as a base for the new one. Many problems that appear after fitting come from a base that was not checked properly, so we use the visit to test three things: firmness, flatness and dryness.

How firm the current floor is

We tap the tiles and look for loose or hollow areas. Moving or broken tile makes a poor base because it shows through the new floor. If only a few are affected we repair them; if many are, we lift them.

Flatness and level differences

Vinyl and floating planks reveal any highs and lows in the base. We measure with a straight edge and decide whether a levelling compound is enough or whether wider correction is needed. More in our levelling guide.

Damp and dryness

Rising damp or an old leak threatens parquet and carpet in particular. We ask about the floor's history and any past leaks, and decide whether a barrier or treatment is needed before fitting.

New floor height and doors

Fitting over the old floor raises the level by a few millimetres to a few centimetres. We point out the effect on doors, thresholds and kitchen entrances; see floor height and door clearance.

Budget and disruption

A full tear-out costs more and brings more dust. If the existing floor is sound, covering it saves time; if it is not, the apparent saving turns into trouble later. We give you the whole picture.

Quick comparison

Renovate over the old floor or replace it?

A general comparison; the final decision follows inspection of the floor at the visit
ApproachWhen it suitsWhat to watch
Covering over tilesFirm, level, dry tilesHeight at doors and deep tile joints
Floating planksA level, dry baseNeed an underlay and are sensitive to big level differences

We do not publish fixed prices because cost depends on area, material and base condition. Ask for a quote after the visit, or see our vinyl prices and parquet prices guides.

By space

Renovating floors at home, in shops and in offices

Priorities change from one space to another; these are the main ones.

Living rooms and majlis

Large areas with daily use, so we look for a material that stands up and looks good; see living room flooring.

Bedrooms

Comfort and quiet matter most, so carpet or parquet may suit; see bedroom flooring.

Offices and shops

Work cannot stop for long, so we plan the job in stages; see showroom flooring.

Stairs and corridors

The highest wear points, so we pick what handles repeated walking; for stairs see stair carpet.

How we work

How we renew your old floor

  1. Visit and inspect

We visit and check how firm, level and dry the floor is.

  2. Choose the route

We compare covering, removing and repairing and suggest what suits your budget.

  3. Prepare the base

We lift the old surface if needed, treat cracks and level the floor.

  4. Fitting

Cost

What decides the cost of renovating a floor?

The new material

Vinyl, parquet and carpet differ in thickness, quality and way of fitting.

Condition of the current floor

A sound floor reduces preparation; a damaged one needs more treatment.

Removing the old floor

Lifting tile or carpet adds labour, time and disposal.

Levelling and underlay

Levelling compound and underlay are added where needed and protect the new floor.

Area and number of rooms

Larger areas usually lower the rate per metre; many small rooms increase waste.

Skirting and details

Skirting, thresholds and door adjustments are part of the quote.

An important detail

Doors, thresholds and floor height

What surprises homeowners most after a renovation is the new floor level at the doors. We check this on the visit so doors do not rub and there are no awkward steps between rooms.

  • Measuring door clearance before choosing the thickness
  • Finishing thresholds between rooms with a gradual transition
  • Trimming the bottom of doors where needed
  • Choosing skirting that covers the edge gap

Avoid

Common mistakes when renovating a floor

Covering loose tiles

Noises and cracks show through the new floor within months.

Ignoring damp

Parquet or carpet over a damp base is a common cause of swelling and odours.

Forgetting door height

The door no longer closes or rubs the floor after fitting.

Choosing from a picture only

Colours change with light, so ask for a sample in your own space.

Postponing a leak repair

An untreated leak ruins a new floor however good the material.

Judging by the rate per metre alone

The base and the details are a real part of the true cost.

After renovation

How to look after the new floor

Follow the material's guidance

Each material has its own cleaning method, and we give written instructions at handover.

Protect against scratches

Put felt pads under furniture and avoid dragging it across the surface.

Control moisture

Dry spills quickly and fix any leak at once.

Check the edges

Review skirting and thresholds regularly and treat any lifting early.

Estimate the area

Estimate the area of floor to renew

Enter the length and width of each room, then send the result on WhatsApp with a photo of the current floor.

Questions about renovating old floors

Can the floor be changed without breaking out the tiles?

In many cases yes, if the tiles are firm, level and dry; they are treated and covered with vinyl or floating planks. We decide at the visit.

How long does renovation take?

It depends on the area, the base and the material. Covering is quicker than full replacement, and we give you a time after measuring.

Do I need to empty the property?

Usually only the room being worked on is cleared, and we work in stages so you can use the other rooms.

What is the best material for renewing an old floor on a modest budget?

Vinyl is among the most practical options for a quick renewal, and engineered or laminate planks may suit dry rooms. We show you the differences at the visit.

Can parquet go over old carpet?

We do not advise it: carpet is soft and moves under the planks, so it is better removed and the base prepared.

Do you lift and dispose of the old floor?

We agree this in the quote, and we can arrange lifting and clearing as agreed.

What if there is damp in the floor?

We find the source first, because damp must be treated before any fitting, and we may recommend a barrier or a different solution.

Will fitting affect door heights?

The level may rise a little, so we measure the doors on the visit, choose a suitable thickness and treat the thresholds.

Can I renew just one room?

Yes, and the threshold between the new room and the rest can be finished so the transition looks acceptable.
