Carpet Quality and Density in Riyadh: How to Read the Specs Before You Buy

When you compare two carpet quotes that look alike, the difference often sits in things the eye cannot see: pile density, pile height, fibre type and backing. This guide explains each specification in plain language, shows how to match it to the room you are carpeting, and then we help you choose after a free site visit in Riyadh. We do not quote fixed numbers here because the reference is always the data sheet of the product itself.

Core specifications

Six specifications that define carpet quality

Ask any seller for this information and compare offers using it. If a seller cannot state them, that is a signal worth pausing on.

Pile density

This is how much fibre is packed into each square metre. The higher it is, the firmer the surface and the better it resists crushing under furniture and footsteps. Low-density carpet can look fine on day one and then show walking paths faster.

Pile height

Short pile is easier to clean and walk on and suits offices and corridors. Taller pile feels softer and more luxurious in bedrooms and majlis, but needs more care.

Fibre type

Fibres differ in feel, stain resistance and resilience. We explain the common types in the next section and how each suits different uses.

Total weight

Usually given in grams per square metre, it reflects the amount of material in the face and backing. Comparing it between two products of the same type gives a reasonable idea of the difference in material.

Backing

The layer that holds the fibres in place and gives the carpet stability when cut and fitted. A good backing reduces stretching and rippling and affects how clean the edges are when cut.

Recommended use

Some products are made for light domestic use, others for offices or commercial use. Follow the manufacturer’s stated use as far as possible.

Fibres

Carpet fibre types and how to choose between them

Fibre is what your foot touches and what takes the wear and the stains, so it deserves attention. What follows is general industry knowledge, and details vary from product to product.

Polypropylene

One of the most common fibres in economy and mid-range carpet, known for moisture resistance and for being easy to clean of certain stains. It feels less soft than other fibres and needs good density so the pile does not flatten quickly. It often suits offices and busy rooms.

Polyester

Valued for a soft feel and rich colours, and widely used in room and majlis carpet. It can flatten over time in walking paths, so the pile should be dense and suited to the use.

Nylon

Known for high resilience and its ability to spring back after pressure, so it appears often in commercial and project use. It is usually priced higher and suits corridors and halls with heavy movement.

Weave and construction matter as much as the fibre itself. Office carpet, for instance, differs from room carpet, and you will find comparisons on our pages for office carpet, roll carpet and Turkish carpet.

Samples

Samples that show the difference in weave and colour

Samples from our showroom help you see the difference in surface before you decide.

Dense dark weave

Dark colours hide dust but show lint and light hair, so choose based on how the space is used.

Rolls of neutral carpet for homes

Calm colours suit bedrooms and living rooms and match most furniture.

Striped weave

Stripes hide footprints more than a plain surface and suit corridors and offices.

By room

Linking the specs to the room you are carpeting

A carpet that works in a bedroom may not suit an office corridor, and the reverse is true. First ask: how many people walk here every day? Are there chairs on castors? Do children come in with shoes? Is the space near a sandy entrance? The answers decide density and fibre more than the brand name does.

In offices, for example, castor chairs run along the same paths daily and flatten the pile quickly. We advise a durable weave and good density, and you can look at carpet tiles, where damaged tiles can be swapped without changing the whole floor. In domestic rooms you can focus on softness with reasonable density, and it is wise to ask about ease of cleaning if you have children.

If quiet is a core requirement, see soundproof carpet, because the underlay and the density work together to absorb echo. In all cases, ask for a sample at least the size of your palm and view it in the lighting of the room itself.

In practice

How to check a carpet sample before buying

  1. Look at the backing

Turn the sample over. A solid surface without wide gaps between the fibres is a sign of better density.

  2. Part the pile

Part the pile with a finger: the sooner you see the backing, the lower the density. Dense pile hides the backing easily.

  3. Press and watch

Press the surface and release, and watch how fast it recovers. Slow recovery suggests the pile may flatten in walking paths.

  4. Compare weights

If weights in grams per square metre are given, compare them between two products of the same type, but do not rely on them alone.

  5. See it in place

Put the sample in the real room and view it morning and evening before the final decision.

Common mistakes

Mistakes we see when people choose carpet

Relying on price alone

The cheapest offer may have lower density and a weak backing, so you pay the difference later with an early replacement. Compare specifications before totals and get every item in writing.

Choosing home carpet for an office

A product designed for light domestic use may show wear quickly in offices. Ask about the recommended use.

Forgetting waste when ordering

Cutting, patterns and direction need extra quantity. Learn the calculation in how to measure for flooring.

Care

How to extend carpet life after installation

Good quality still needs reasonable care to last. Vacuum regularly to remove fine sand that acts as an abrasive between the fibres, treat spills at once by blotting rather than rubbing, put protectors under heavy furniture and move it occasionally to spread the pressure. Learn suitable cleaning methods in our carpet cleaning and care guide.

Consider placing a mat at the entrance to reduce dirt coming in, because this small step protects carpet more than you might expect. If you notice rippling or raised edges, contact us early, since fixing the fitting in good time is far easier.

Before you pay

Questions to ask a seller before you sign a carpet quote

Good buying starts with good questions. Ask any supplier, including us, to answer the following in writing before agreeing: exactly which fibre is it? What use was the product designed for, domestic or commercial? What are the pile height and weight, if declared? What backing does it have? Is enough of the product available from the same colour batch? That last point matters because batch differences can show as colour variation between two rolls.

Also ask about fitting: does the price include underlay? Does it include removing the old carpet? How is it fixed, glued or with gripper strips? Are edges and thresholds included? How long will the work take? Any item left unstated can appear later as an extra cost, which is why we aim to give a clear written quote after measuring.

Finally, do not hesitate to take a sample home. The eye does not judge weave and colour well under showroom lighting, and a decision taken after seeing the sample in place leaves far less regret. For large jobs see project solutions to coordinate quantities and scheduling.

Carpet quality: common questions

What is the most important specification for carpet quality?

No single one, but pile density together with fibre type and backing is the trio that decides durability. Next comes how well the product suits the use you have in mind.

Is taller pile always better?

Not necessarily. Taller pile is softer but harder to maintain and may flatten faster in busy areas. Short dense pile suits offices and corridors better.

How do I know whether a carpet is dense?

Part the pile with a finger and see whether the backing shows easily. The harder it is to see the backing, the denser it usually is. Also compare weights if they are given in grams per square metre.

Which fibres suit offices best?

Durable fibres such as nylon or polypropylene in a weave made for commercial use are typical, and the right choice depends on traffic and budget.

Does the backing affect fitting?

Yes. A good backing reduces stretching and rippling, gives cleaner edges when cut and fixed, and affects stability over time.

How do I compare quotes from two suppliers?

Compare type, density, height, weight, backing, underlay thickness, fitting and waste, and get it all in writing. One differing item can explain a price gap.

Is dark carpet more durable?

Colour does not change durability, only what shows. Dark hides dust and shows light lint, while light shows stains. Choose by how the space is used.
