Fibres trap dust
Dust that lands on a hard floor stays on the surface and is wiped away easily. In carpet it settles between the fibres and has to be vacuumed out.
Many people in Riyadh hesitate to fit carpet because they worry about dust and allergies. In truth carpet holds more dust than a hard floor, but choosing the right type, caring for it regularly and fitting it only in the right rooms changes the picture a lot. Here is what to expect and what the alternatives are. This page is not medical advice, and anyone with a serious allergy should ask their doctor.

Carpet is made of thousands of upright fibres, which is exactly what makes it warm and soft, and also what makes it catch dust. Understanding the mechanism helps you decide calmly, without fear and without complacency.
Dust that lands on a hard floor stays on the surface and is wiped away easily. In carpet it settles between the fibres and has to be vacuumed out.
Walking and sitting on carpet can lift settled dust into the air for a short time, which is why complaints appear in homes where vacuuming is infrequent.
On dusty days fine dust enters through doors, windows and air vents and reaches every floor, but it shows less on carpet than on a glossy hard surface.
If carpet stays damp after cleaning or a leak, mould and odour can appear. Thorough drying and ventilation are part of proper care.
Most dust is carried in by people. Taking shoes off at the door of carpeted areas noticeably reduces what reaches the fibres.
Air currents from air conditioners can move dust around a room. Cleaning filters regularly and servicing the system eases the load on the floor and the air.
No carpet is completely free of dust, but a few simple habits reduce what stays in it and keep rooms comfortable. This is general guidance, and the manufacturer's instructions remain the reference for each product.
Vacuuming twice a week in busy rooms, and as needed in rooms used less, stops soil building up. A cleaner with good filtration keeps dust inside rather than returning some of it to the air, and emptying the bin or changing the bag on time keeps suction strong.
Once or twice a year, depending on use, children and pets, steam or foam cleaning with a product suited to the fibre helps, followed by complete drying. See our carpet cleaning and care guide for more detail.
Ventilated, dry rooms are less prone to odour and mould. Deal with any leak immediately, and never fit carpet over a damp floor before checking it.
A solid mat at the entrance and a shoe rack save a great deal of effort, and they are the cheapest of all measures.
If someone in the household has a severe chest or skin allergy and their doctor has advised reducing dust sources, a hard floor with a small rug that can be lifted and cleaned may suit better. That medical decision belongs to your doctor, not to us.
Many ideas circulate about carpet, some partly right and some out of date. This is what we see from fitting carpet in homes and offices.
Not true. Modern carpet is vacuumed and cleaned with steam or foam and recovers its look when looked after. It does need more commitment than a floor that is simply wiped with a damp mop.
This is not a general rule. The problem is usually built-up dust, too little vacuuming and humidity, not carpet alone, and allergies differ from person to person.
Dark colours can hide light dust but show pale fluff and dust clearly. No colour exempts you from cleaning.
Hard floors are easier to wipe, but dust returns to the surface quickly and needs frequent mopping. The difference is in how you handle it, not in the absence of dust.
| Why it matters | Note | |
|---|---|---|
| Short, dense pile | Easier to vacuum and traps less dust deep down | May show wear sooner if cleaning is neglected |
| High density | Withstands foot traffic and recovers its shape | Needs a cleaner with good suction to reach the base |
| Stable, good backing | Prevents stretching and reduces raised edges | We check it with samples during the visit |
| Mid colour or fine pattern | Hides dust between vacuuming | Does not replace regular cleaning |
| Carpet tiles | A soiled or damaged tile can be replaced alone | See carpet tiles in Riyadh |

It gives warmth and comfort for sitting, and suits households that vacuum regularly and have no one with severe allergies.

It softens sound and looks tidy, and tiles help when part of the floor needs replacing. See office carpet.

It reduces slipping and noise, but regular cleaning matters in high traffic zones. See stair carpet.
Young children, elderly people or someone with an allergy: this decides the type and the rooms first.
Carpet in bedrooms and majlis rooms may be a different decision from kitchens and entrances.
Pile, density, backing and colour, after seeing samples.
Decide vacuuming and deep cleaning dates before buying so the decision is not only theoretical.
We measure, check the floor and explain the options plainly.
We are not for carpet everywhere. Sometimes the better answer is a hard floor with a rug you can lift, and we supply those too.
Easy to wipe, with no dust sinking into the floor, and some types resist water. Read about SPC flooring in Riyadh.
A warm wood look cleaned with a vacuum and a slightly damp mop. See laminate parquet.
Gives warmth in the seating area only, and can be lifted, shaken and cleaned. See modern rugs.
A hard floor in corridors and the kitchen and carpet in a bedroom or study, provided the transition between floors is well done. We discuss this on the visit.
Anyone who wants warmth without committing to wall-to-wall carpet can choose an easy-clean hard floor and place a rug in the seating area only. A rug can be lifted, shaken outside and cleaned more easily than a fixed carpet.
This suits tenants and anyone wary of a long commitment, but the rug needs the right size or it looks small. Our rug size guide has helpful detail.
If you decide on carpet in only one room, such as a bedroom or study, you can keep a hard floor in the rest of the home. You get comfort where you need it and easier everyday cleaning in the kitchen and corridors. We talk through the layout during the visit.

You will keep up with vacuuming, nobody has a severe allergy, you want warmth and quieter rooms, and you choose a short, dense pile. Starting with one room lets you test the care routine first.
The room is prone to humidity, spills are frequent, or someone in the family has an allergy for which their doctor recommends fewer dust sources.
You have an allergy diagnosis. We give technical options only, not medical opinions.
Enter the length and width of a room to get its approximate area, then send the result on WhatsApp and we will suggest what suits it.
Carpet itself is not always the direct cause, but it can hold dust that bothers people with allergies. It depends on the type of carpet, how it is cared for and the person. Ask your doctor if you have a diagnosis.
It can be if you vacuum regularly, take shoes off and ventilate rooms. If you cannot keep up with that, an easy-clean hard floor may be a better fit.
Busy rooms may need vacuuming twice a week, and less-used rooms less often. Increase it in dust seasons or with children and pets.
Yes for deep cleaning, provided the room is left to dry completely and ventilated and the product follows the manufacturer's guidance, because leftover moisture causes problems.
Usually a short, dense pile with a good backing and a mid colour, as it is easier to vacuum and shows dust less. We show you the available options and explain their limits.
They let you replace one soiled or damaged tile alone, but they do not remove the need to vacuum. They suit offices and halls where use changes.
Vinyl, or parquet and laminate with a loose rug that can be lifted and cleaned, are common alternatives. The medical decision is for your doctor; we explain the technical options.
In most cases yes, once the floor is confirmed level and dry. We check it during the visit before setting out the steps.
