HDF
Short for high-density fibreboard, the core from which most laminate is made. Core density affects stability and resistance to swelling with moisture, but it is not the only factor in quality.
In Riyadh showrooms you hear terms like HDF parquet, German parquet and 12 mm parquet, and their meanings often blur for the buyer. This guide explains what each term really means, what is worth asking the seller, and how to compare two quotes, and then we install the floor after a free site visit in Riyadh. We do not claim particular brands here, because the reference is always the product data sheet and its certificates.

We unpack each term in plain language, because understanding the term is the first step to a fair comparison.
Short for high-density fibreboard, the core from which most laminate is made. Core density affects stability and resistance to swelling with moisture, but it is not the only factor in quality.
Parquet made of an HDF core, a printed decorative layer and a clear scratch-resistant top layer. It differs from natural timber and from engineered wood.
A thin layer of natural timber over other layers. It has the look and feel of real wood and needs more care, and it usually costs more.
A system grading the surface’s resistance to wear, from low levels for light use to high levels for commercial use. Ask for the written rating and choose what suits the space.
Measured in millimetres, it affects how solid the floor feels and its height at doors, but unlike some products it does not decide quality alone.
The way boards lock together without glue in a floating floor. The quality of the lock defines how tight the joints are and how easy and stable laying is.
The phrase “German parquet” is common in adverts, and it can mean very different things: that the product was actually made in Germany, that the core or top layer is imported from there, or that the design and technology follow German standards without the factory being there. These are real differences that can affect price and specifications, which is why we advise not relying on the name alone.
Ask the seller for the country of manufacture printed on the packaging or a certificate of origin, plus the manufacturer’s name and batch number. Ask about the quality and emission certificates the product declares, since some products state an emission class for the materials used in the core and the adhesive, and it matters that the certificate comes from a recognised body and matches the product you will actually buy.
What decides how the floor performs in your home is the sum of the following: core quality and density, wear rating, precision of the click profile, moisture resistance and soundness of installation. A product that is not German can be excellent and one carrying the name can be average, so compare written specifications. For laminate in general see laminate flooring in Riyadh.
| Practical question | Why it matters | |
|---|---|---|
| Core type | Is it HDF or something else, and what density? | Affects stability and resistance to swelling |
| Wear class | What is the written rating? | Decides suitability for the space |
| Thickness | How many mm, and is an underlay attached? | Affects height and feel |
| Country of manufacture | Where exactly was it made? | Clarifies what “German” means |
| Emissions | Is there a written certificate? | For comfortable indoor air |
| Click system | What type of lock is used? | Defines how tight the joints are |
Send a photo of the space and its area on WhatsApp and we will arrange a visit in Riyadh and recommend the right parquet.
A variety of looks to help you link specifications to appearance.

Light colours give a small room a feeling of space and suit simple furniture.

Grey tones are contemporary and need careful choice of pattern so they do not look cold.

Opens up the living room and suits many tastes with a good underlay beneath.
Quiet and comfort matter more than maximum resistance, so choose a moderate class with a good underlay and a colour easy on the eye.
Heavy traffic and guests call for a higher wear class and a precise click, and attention to plank direction relative to the light.
A commercial-use rating is the basis, with castor chairs and constant shoe traffic.
These need scratch resistance and tolerance of sand and dust, so favour a tougher surface and a mat at the door.
Get a written statement of the core, thickness, wear class and click system.
Ask for a certificate of origin, and if “German” is claimed, ask for proof of what is meant.
Make sure quantities include waste and that the batch is the same.
Underlay, skirting, profiles, removal of the old floor and moisture checks.
Look at a large sample in the room’s light, not just a small piece.
A name does not replace a specification sheet. Two products can carry the same name with different specifications.
Even the best plank swells if laid on a damp floor. See treating swollen parquet for the causes.
A floating floor needs a flat base and a suitable underlay, detailed in floor preparation.
Offices and shops need a higher wear class than bedrooms. Ask about recommended use.
Floating parquet with an HDF core is usually installed by click joint over an underlay, without gluing directly to the floor, with an expansion gap around the walls hidden by the skirting. That makes installation relatively quick, but it requires a flat, dry floor, because an underlay does not correct large differences or high moisture.
Engineered wood may be glued or fixed by other methods depending on the product and the manufacturer’s instructions, and patterns such as herringbone and chevron demand greater precision and centre-line planning. Details are in parquet installation in Riyadh and herringbone and chevron parquet. The work is incomplete without suitable skirting and profiles, which you will find in skirting and profiles.
After installation the floor needs simple care: cleaning with a little water and suitable products, protectors under furniture and avoiding flooding with water. Maintenance and scratch repair are covered in parquet maintenance and repair.
First ask yourself about the nature of the use: a bedroom, a busy family lounge, an office or a shop? Then link the answer to wear class, thickness and click. In bedrooms a lower class with a good underlay is often enough for quiet footsteps, while in lounges and offices a higher class, a precise click and suitable thickness are preferable.
Do not forget colours and patterns that suit their surroundings: light colours reflect light and open up a room, and dark ones feel luxurious but show dust and scratches more. If you are torn between parquet and vinyl, read vinyl vs parquet vs tiles to understand the differences in water and upkeep.
Collect these answers in writing: what is the core type and its density if declared? What is the product’s wear class? What is the total thickness? What click system does it use? What is the country of manufacture and the manufacturer’s name? Are there emission certificates? Is the quantity available from the same batch? Does the price include the underlay, skirting, profiles, removal of the old floor and a moisture check?
Keeping these answers protects you later if you need to replace a plank or repair part of the floor, because a different batch can show as a colour difference. We write our quote item by item after measuring so it is easy to compare with any other, and you will find pricing factors in parquet prices in Riyadh.
Enter the room length and width to see the area and a suggested quantity including waste, then send it on WhatsApp so we can recommend the type.
It is parquet, usually laminate, whose core is made of high-density fibreboard, with a printed layer and a scratch-resistant top layer. Its quality depends on core density, wear class and click system, not just the name.
Laminate is a printed layer over an HDF core, while engineered wood has a thin layer of natural timber over other layers. The latter is closer to real wood and usually costs more.
Not on its own, because it may refer to the country of manufacture, the source of materials or the design approach. Ask for a certificate of origin and a specification sheet and compare what is written.
It is a rating of the surface’s resistance to wear and use, from light to commercial. Ask for the product’s written rating and choose what suits the space.
Denser boards resist moisture better, but it does not tolerate flooding. It is therefore not advised where leaks occur or on damp floors, and we check moisture before installation.
It varies with the product, the use and the height needed at doors, and we do not rely on one number. We decide what suits after the visit.
Usually yes for floating floors, because it softens sound, corrects small irregularities and reduces the effect of light moisture. Details are on our underlay page.
Contact us by phone or WhatsApp with photos of the space and an approximate area. We arrange a free visit in Riyadh and then send a written quote after measuring.
We do not usually recommend it where water hits the floor directly, as water-resistant options such as vinyl suit better. It can be used in an open kitchen away from the sink and leaks with extra care at the joints.
Compare the batch number, product name and specifications on the packaging with the written quote and the sample, and open one box on delivery to check colour and click before laying. Report any difference at once before installation.
In many cases one or more planks can be replaced, which is easier if a reasonable spare quantity from the same batch is kept. We therefore advise ordering a sensible surplus, and repair details are on our parquet maintenance page.
