Surface scratches
These come from dragged furniture or grit under shoes. Light scratches can often be treated with repair products; deep ones may need the board replaced.
Swollen boards, scratches, gaps between planks or a squeak underfoot? We inspect your floor first to find the cause, because humidity, air-conditioning and the subfloor are more common culprits than the board itself, then we suggest the right repair. Most problems appear gradually. Spotting the early sign is the difference between a small repair and replacing many boards. Planning a new floor instead? Read our parquet installation steps.
These come from dragged furniture or grit under shoes. Light scratches can often be treated with repair products; deep ones may need the board replaced.
Raised edges or a cupped board usually point to moisture or water that has leaked from below or beside a wall, and pressing it down does not cure it.
They appear with dry air, a moving subfloor or poor fitting, and range from acceptable to large enough to need checking.
Often from an uneven subfloor, a void under the underlay or friction at the edges, and needs the spot to be located.
Caused by knocks, moisture or poor cutting at doors, and usually repaired by replacing the affected board.
Direct sun can fade the colour along windows, and in some types cleaning products leave marks.
We do not start repairing before we know the cause, or the fault returns within weeks.
| Sign | Likely cause | What we check and suggest |
|---|---|---|
| Swollen edges | Moisture from a leak, the subfloor or wet mopping | The water source first, then drying the floor, then replacing damaged boards once dry |
| Gaps that widen in summer or winter | Changing humidity and air-conditioning, or compressed boards | Measuring the gap, finding out if it is seasonal, and checking the expansion gap and skirting fixings |
| Squeak in one spot | Uneven subfloor or a void under the underlay | Locating the spot and checking the floor below; we may lift the board and treat the base |
| Deep scratch in a board | Impact or dragged furniture | Spot repair where possible, otherwise replacing the board with one from the spares |
The sooner the floor is checked after a sign appears, the fewer boards are affected, especially with moisture.
Parquet comes in types, and repair differs between laminate and real wood.
Before anything else we identify the floor type: HDF laminate, wood-surfaced parquet or other. A treatment that suits one can harm another.
If the fault is in one board or a few adjacent ones, they can be taken out and replaced with spares from the same batch where available. That means carefully lifting boards from the nearest wall, or cutting the damaged board out from within and fitting a new one in its place.
Surface scratches and small dents can be hidden with repair products in the colour of the floor. Results are best on lightly textured surfaces and depend on how deep the damage is.
Sanding works for real-wood parquet whose top wood layer allows it, but not for HDF laminate, whose surface is a thin printed layer that cannot be sanded. We check the wear layer before recommending anything.
Sometimes the problem is skirting fixed to the floor instead of the wall, or a blocked expansion gap. Correcting it restores the natural movement of the boards and can cure mild swelling.

We run a straightedge, measure gaps, check edges and skirting, and ask about the history of the problem and any past leaks.

We lift the affected board carefully without damaging its neighbours and fit the replacement with the correct locking.

We refit skirting and thresholds, remove dust and check the floor by eye and hand before leaving.
We examine the floor, skirting and doors, and ask about leaks, air-conditioning changes or wet mopping.
We deal with the water source, level the subfloor or correct the expansion gap before changing any boards.
Affected boards are lifted without harming neighbours, and the floor beneath is checked and dried or levelled.
Replacement boards are fitted or scratches repaired, and the locking is restored at the correct angle.
Skirting and profiles are refitted, the floor is wiped, and we advise how to stop the fault returning.

What extends the life of parquet most is simple daily habits. Mop with a slightly damp cloth, never a wet one, dry spills straight away, and avoid steam mops because steam works into the joints.
Put felt pads under furniture legs, lift heavy pieces instead of dragging them, and use a mat at the entrance so grit does not scratch the surface. Keep air-conditioning as steady as you can, because sudden humidity changes make boards move. In sunny rooms, rotating rugs and drawing curtains reduces fading. We go through these points with you at handover.

A small leak under a sink or an air-conditioner can ruin several boards, so check wet areas from time to time.
A small fault grows with foot traffic and humidity, and replacing one board early is usually cheaper than many later.
Boards from the same batch help match colour and pattern whenever you need a replacement.
A light wipe with a suitable cleaner beats washing with water; we follow your product’s instructions.
The most common cause is moisture, from a leak, a damp subfloor or heavy wet cleaning. We find the source first, because replacing boards without dealing with it repeats the problem, then dry the floor and replace what is damaged.
Some mild swelling may ease once the source is dry, the tight skirting is released and the boards are given room to move, but boards whose structure has been damaged do not recover and are replaced. We judge after the inspection.
Often yes, if a board matching in colour, pattern and thickness is available, which is why we advise keeping spares after installation. We lift the board and fit the replacement without redoing the whole floor.
It depends on the type. Real-wood parquet with a thick wood top layer may accept sanding, whereas HDF laminate has a thin printed surface that cannot be sanded. We check the type and wear layer before recommending anything.
Usually an uneven subfloor under the underlay, a void, or friction between boards and skirting. We locate the spot by walking and inspecting, and may treat it by levelling, refixing or lifting a particular board.
They can, with changing humidity and air-conditioning, because boards move slightly. If gaps stay large and constant it may point to poor fitting or a moving subfloor, which is what we check at the inspection.
Repairing a few boards can be done in hours or a day. Treating after a water leak needs time to dry the floor before refitting. We give a time estimate after the inspection.
Clear close-up and wide photos of the problem, the size of the affected area, the floor type if you know it, and whether there has been a leak or a change in air-conditioning. We confirm the estimate at the free inspection, and you can also read what affects parquet prices.
