The turf itself
Pile height, density, yarn and backing set the material cost. Lookalike photos can hide big differences.

Pile height, density, yarn and backing set the material cost. Lookalike photos can hide big differences.
Digging, compaction, sub-base and drainage: a major line on soil, a small one on a tiled roof.
You pay for what comes off the roll; roll width and pile direction set the gap.
No edging, adhesive or sand? That quote isn’t cheaper — it’s incomplete.
“Price per metre” usually blurs two things: the turf and the labour to lay it. Our artificial grass page explains what each feature does in use; here we look only at cost.
On soil, groundwork can weigh as much as the grass: soil type, old roots, topsoil to dig out and remove, and aggregate and sand for the base are all judged on site, not from photos.
It grows further where the garden sits low or has no fall. Drop drainage from a quote and it looks lighter today — then water pools after the first wash-down.
A tiled roof needs no digging, but may add foam underlay, wind-proof edges, cutting around drains and carrying rolls upstairs — see our rooftop grass guide.
Pitches add large volumes of sand or rubber infill, bonded line markings and sometimes a shock pad, so a metre of sports turf and a metre of lawn are simply not comparable.
Large, regular areas waste less and cut faster, which usually lowers the cost per metre; beds, trees and curves do the opposite.
Worked example: a 9 × 6 m garden is 54 m² net. In 4 m-wide rolls running 9 m it takes two strips: 9 × 8 = 72 m² cut, 18 m² of it offcut. One 4 m strip plus one 2 m strip brings the order close to 54 m². Since every piece must have its pile facing the same way, offcuts can’t always be turned to fill a gap.
Fill in one column per quote. Every blank is a question to ask before you compare.
| Item | A complete quote states | Ask the supplier |
|---|---|---|
| Product | Product name or code, pile height, density, backing — plus a sample | Is the delivered roll identical to this sample? |
| Quantity | Net area, cut quantity and roll width | How was waste worked out, and where do seams fall? |
| Groundwork | Excavation, compaction and sub-base layers | Is the dug-out soil removed from site? |
| Drainage | Proposed fall and how drains are handled | Where will rinse water and rain go? |
| Fixing | Edging type, seaming method and adhesive | How are edges fixed at beds or parapets? |
| Extras | Sand, weed membrane, underlay, removal of old surface | What is not included? |
| Handover | Clean-up and care advice | Who takes away offcuts and waste? |
Laying and seaming arrive later, in a separate message.
“Premium thick grass” with no pile, density or sample — so a lookalike turns up.
No compaction, sub-base or weed barrier; ripples follow within months.
Offcut waste added as a new line on delivery day.
Nothing about falls or drains, so puddles become your problem.
Edging, sand and waste removal requested once the crew is on site.
Spend more on turf that bakes in full sun all day or takes daily play: better yarn and density hold their shape longer, spreading the cost over more years.
A shady decorative corner or a little-used balcony can do well with a mid-range product on a good base. The costly mistake is skimping on the base, because fixing it later means lifting the lawn.

Clear details up front bring the first estimate closer to the final quote.
Length and width of each part, or a sketch — see our measuring guide.
A wide shot, a close-up of the surface, and the drains and bed edges.
Soil, tiles, concrete, an old lawn, or worn turf to lift.
Family seating, toddlers, dogs or football each suit a different product.
Is there a lift or side gate, and when should work start?
Enter length and width and pick a roll width to see net area against cut quantity. Quantity only — pricing follows the visit.
A bare number means little until we know the product, the ground and the fitting method: a metre laid on bare soil and a metre with excavation, edging and drainage are different things. We would rather see the space on a free visit in Riyadh and send an itemised quote.
Groundwork is usually lighter on a roof, as nothing needs digging. But roofs add their own items — underlay, wind-proof edges, cutting around drains and carrying rolls up — so the totals can end up closer than people expect. The site visit settles it.
Usually, for large regular areas, because waste is proportionally lower and crew time goes further. A big garden split into small sections between beds and paths gains much less. We price each section, add them up and show the method on the quote.
Ask for the product name or code and its key specs on the quote, and keep the sample or photograph it beside a ruler. On delivery, compare colour, blade length and density before laying starts — a simple check against lookalike substitutes.
