Trapped water under the grass
When the base has no fall or poor drainage, water stays under the fibres and a stale smell appears. Good drainage is built in at installation, as in grass base and drainage.
Artificial grass rarely smells by itself, but poor drainage, organic residue and trapped moisture can make it unpleasant. This page explains the common causes in Riyadh gardens and roofs, how to clean and prevent them, and which installation details stop the problem from the start. We then arrange a free inspection and a quote.

Before reaching for a cleaner, find the cause, because treatment differs for trapped water and for organic residue. For general care, see artificial grass maintenance.
When the base has no fall or poor drainage, water stays under the fibres and a stale smell appears. Good drainage is built in at installation, as in grass base and drainage.
Leaves, food and dust collect between fibres and break down with moisture, especially near seating areas and outdoor kitchens.
Cat and dog urine soaks into the fibres and base if it is not rinsed quickly. See artificial grass for pets.
Standing water in roof corners or blocked drains starts odours and can grow algae.
Some new products have a faint manufacturing smell in the first days that fades with airing.
Some strong cleaners leave residue or react with the fibres or adhesive, making the problem worse.
The first question we ask is when the smell appears. After rain or washing, it is usually drainage. In one place beside a pet or a table, it is organic residue. In the first days after installation, it may be the new product. Knowing the timing saves you trying many cleaners.
Permeable artificial grass needs a prepared base with layers and a fall that lets water out. Without that, water stays under the grass however much you wash the surface. On roofs and balconies, make sure drains are not blocked, and check them after sandstorms.
If an existing installation traps water, part of the grass may have to be lifted and the base corrected, which we decide after an inspection.
Remove leaves and dust with a broom or soft brush weekly, or as use demands, then rinse with running water so it drains through the base. We avoid abrasive materials and use mild cleaners suited to artificial grass.
Outdoor kitchens and seating areas collect grease and food, so wipe spills straight away.
If an animal urinates on the grass, rinse the spot with plenty of water as soon as possible, then use a suitable mild cleaner following the product instructions. We do not promise to remove every old odour, as it may have reached the base; in that case the base and drainage need checking.
Riyadh’s strong sun helps dry the surface and reduce dampness, but strong exposure can also heat the grass as covered in artificial grass and summer heat. Balance matters: good drying without excessive exposure.
The best way to limit odour later is to design the base properly from the start: a fall for drainage, a layer that lets water through and grass with perforated backing. We follow these steps in artificial grass installation and explain them before work begins.
If an odour returns soon after cleaning, if water stands for hours after rain, or if you notice algae or a spongy base, send us photos on WhatsApp. These point to a drainage or base issue that cleaning alone will not solve.

Standing water and blocked drains are the main causes here, so we check the fall and drain openings first.

Food and drinks fall on the grass, so we recommend quick cleaning and good drainage.

Large areas need better drainage and regular cleaning of leaves and dust.
Does it smell after rain, in one spot, or new after installation?
Remove leaves and dust with a brush or broom.
Rinse and make sure the water drains through the base rather than staying.
Use a mild cleaner suited to artificial grass on the affected spot.
If the smell returns, check the fall and drain openings and ask for an inspection.
| Cause | Sign | First remedy |
|---|---|---|
| Trapped water | Stale smell after rain or washing | Check fall, base and drainage |
| Organic residue | Smell in a spot near food or trees | Remove residue and rinse with plenty of water |
| Pet urine | Strong smell in one place | Rinse at once, use a suitable cleaner, check the base |
| New-product smell | Appears in the first days and fades | Airing and exposure to fresh air |
We do not recommend mixing cleaners or using strong chemicals on grass. Follow the product instructions and ask us when in doubt.
Choosing grass with perforated backing, a permeable base and the right fall decides much of how clean the grass stays later. On roofs and balconies we respect drain positions and avoid covering them.
See also rooftop grass and balconies for what is specific to those places.

They decay and become a source of smell.
They damage fibres without solving the cause.
Water stays standing under the grass.
It soaks into the base and is harder to remove later.
Usually because water is trapped under the grass when the base is poorly drained or blocked. The fall and drainage need checking.
Some products have a light smell in the first days that fades with airing. If it persists, ask us.
Rinse the spot with plenty of water quickly, then use a mild suitable cleaner. If the smell stays, it may have reached the base and needs checking.
We do not recommend strong or abrasive products. Follow the product instructions.
It can if drains block or water stands, so check the fall and openings.
Sometimes part of the grass must be lifted and the base corrected; an inspection decides the method.
For routine cleaning usually yes, along with removing leaves; organic stains may need a mild cleaner.
