Layered ornament
Persian designs typically feature a central medallion, floral motifs and several borders whose colours graduate in harmony.
Persian-style rugs are among the most familiar sights in majlis rooms and formal living areas, with layered ornament and deep colours. Quality and price vary enormously, though, and buyers often confuse hand-knotted rugs, machine-woven rugs and rugs simply made in a Persian design. We explain how to inspect a rug and choose the right size and material, and we never promise what we cannot prove.

In the market “Persian” can describe a design, an origin or a method of making, and not always all three together. Knowing the difference protects you from paying more than a piece is worth.
Persian designs typically feature a central medallion, floral motifs and several borders whose colours graduate in harmony.
Navy, dark red, gold and beige are common, and they suit classic majlis rooms and formal living spaces.
Hand-knotted pieces take a very long time to make and their prices differ widely from machine-made ones. We always ask how a piece was made.
Machine-made rugs in Persian designs cost less and are easier to maintain while giving a similar look. They are a practical choice for daily use.
Wool is the best known, and silk is sometimes blended with wool in certain pieces. Synthetic fibres are common in machine-made rugs.
Some buyers care about long-term value and others about beauty and daily use. We settle the priority with you before quoting.
Inspecting a rug does not take long experience, only a few simple observations that reveal a lot. Ask the seller for any rug and try these steps on it.
On a hand-knotted rug the pattern is clearly visible on the back and the knots are not perfectly uniform. On a machine-made rug the back is very regular and often has a mesh or latex layer.
Run your hand over the pile to see whether colours shade naturally. Flat, uniform and garish colours may point to harsh synthetic dye.
In a hand-knotted rug the fringe is an extension of the foundation threads, while on a machine-made one it may be sewn on later. Check that the edges are secure too.
If a seller says a piece is authentic from a particular country, ask for something that proves it. We state what we know and do not exaggerate.
| Space | Usual size | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Majlis | A rug covering the seating area, or several pieces | Avoid a rug that shifts under people sitting |
| Living room | A rug large enough for the sofas | Leave a border of bare floor to frame the rug |
| Dining room | Larger than the table by the chair pull-out distance | See dining room rugs |
| Hallways | A long narrow rug | See hallway runner rugs |
| Bedroom | Under or beside the bed | Useful for warmth |
| Study | A piece under the desk | Lifts the look of the room |
Daily use, display, or a formal majlis.
Measure the space and leave margins around the rug.
Compare the types of making and the materials in front of you.
Turn it over and check colours and edges.
We arrange delivery and laying, with a reminder to prevent the rug sliding.
A wool rug can last decades if you look after it, but it is sensitive to long exposure to direct sun, to moisture and to spills. Vacuum regularly with a soft head, rotate the rug now and then so it wears evenly, and blot liquids immediately.

Most come from being dazzled by the look before checking the details.
A word without paper means nothing. Ask about the way it was made and the material.
A rug that is too small looks lost. Try it out by marking the floor with paper tape.
The rug creeps and its edges fray. It is a small investment that matters.
Sun fades colours. Use curtains or rotate the rug.
Dyes and threads can suffer. Use a specialist.
Two close prices can hide a big difference in material and making.

A genuine one is made in a particular country and usually by hand, while “style” means a design inspired by it, and it may be machine-made. We tell you what we know about each piece without exaggeration.
Turn it over and look at the pattern on the back, the knots that are not perfectly uniform, and a fringe that extends from the foundation threads. A careful check takes experience.
