Manufacturing materials and backing
Carpet is made of fibres, a backing and bonding materials between layers, and some leave a smell that fades after the first days.
Many customers notice a light smell with new carpet in the first days after installation. It is a familiar effect with new furnishings and floors in general, and it comes from manufacturing, packaging, adhesive and storage. This guide explains why the smell appears, how to reduce it with ventilation and sensible timing, and what to do if it does not improve. A reminder that we give no medical advice. If your home has a baby, a sensitive person or someone with a respiratory condition, please consult a professional.

Not every smell means a problem, but knowing the cause helps you act sensibly. These are the most common causes in our experience with carpet.
Carpet is made of fibres, a backing and bonding materials between layers, and some leave a smell that fades after the first days.
Sealed rolls in warehouses and containers hold their smell until opened, so it shows up when they are unrolled.
Some fixing methods use adhesive or tape, which can smell temporarily until it dries and the space is aired.
A closed room with only internal air conditioning keeps the smell longer than a room whose air is renewed.
The underlay beneath carpet may add its own smell. See floor underlay and insulation.
If the smell is musty rather than that of new materials, the cause may be damp in the subfloor or a leak, which is a different matter and needs inspection.
The best remedy for new-material smell is fresh air. You need no special products, but you do need a simple plan.
In the first days let a draught of air pass through the room. In Riyadh summers, air early in the morning or after sunset when it is cooler.
A small fan pointing outward speeds up air exchange, and so does opening the room door onto a ventilated corridor.
Add them once the smell eases, since heavy furniture traps air underneath.
Spraying strong fragrances does not remove the source and mixes smells. Ventilation is more useful. Do not cover carpet with plastic sheet either, which traps smell and moisture.
We suggest vacuuming loose dust with a cleaner that has a good filter a day or two after installation, since fine dust from cutting and laying settles in the fibres. For later care see our carpet care guide.
Install when you can air the room for days, not right before guests arrive.
Taking the roll from its wrapping and airing it before laying, per the manufacturer, may reduce some of the smell.
A dry, clean floor and a suitable underlay reduce trapped moisture and the smells that go with it.
We leave windows open and recommend airing the room for days after handover.
Bring heavy furniture back after the smell eases and you are sure the floor is dry.
This table is general guidance to help you tell new-material smell from one that needs inspection.
| Observation | Likely explanation | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A light smell fading in the first days | New materials, adhesive and packaging | Ventilate well and be patient |
| A smell that stays in a closed room | Little air renewal or a new underlay | Open windows and run fans |
| A musty damp smell | Moisture under the carpet or a leak | We inspect the site and trace the source |
| A very sharp smell with headache or irritation | Sensitivity in someone, or poor ventilation | Move sensitive people out, contact us and consult a professional |
| A smell that returns season after season | Moisture build-up or mould growth | We inspect the floor and consider removal or treatment |
We cannot promise that no product has any smell, but some choices help reduce the nuisance.
Some products carry emission data or quality certificates, so ask and request the actual documents from the supplier. We do not assume a certificate exists or invent one, and we show you what is genuinely available.
In children's rooms and bedrooms it is wise to delay use for some days until the smell improves. See children's room flooring and bedroom flooring.
Differences in quality and density affect daily use more than smell, but it helps to read our carpet quality and density guide before buying.
The smell of old carpet is different from that of new. It may come from accumulated dust, damp, old stains or pets.
Deep cleaning may reduce the smell if the source is dust or stains. See carpet stain removal.
If the smell comes from old damp or mould, cleaning is not enough. The steps for lifting it are in old carpet removal, and we agree a suitable replacement with you after a visit.
Fibres hold dust, and if allergy is a concern at home, read carpet and dust allergy and discuss alternatives with us.
To make it easy we have condensed our advice into a short list you can return to right after handover.
This list is general and does not replace the manufacturer instructions for the carpet you bought, since some products have specific ventilation guidance before use. If you are caring for a child or someone ill, rely on professional advice before using the room.
Young children, a sensitive person or elderly relatives? We arrange timing and ventilation.
Do you need it within days? We may suggest a different schedule.
Do the windows open, or is it reliant on closed air conditioning?
Is there any past damp or old smell in the space?
Smell builds up in a closed space, and ventilation in the first days is the most useful thing you can do.
The sheet traps smell and moisture. Let it breathe.
They mix with the smell without solving it and may bother sensitive people.
A damp, musty smell is not new-material smell and needs a prompt inspection.
A light smell in the first days is common with new floors and furnishings and usually eases with ventilation. We give no medical opinion and suggest consulting a professional if anyone is sensitive.
It varies between products and rooms depending on ventilation. Good ventilation speeds its departure, but we give no fixed figure.
It is wise to wait some days with good ventilation, especially for children and sensitive people. The decision is a personal and health one and rests with you.
Fresheners do not treat the source, and some people use various household products, but we advise ventilation first and testing anything in a hidden corner.
It may differ by materials, adhesive and backing, and we have no general rule. Ask about the specific type when buying.
That is normally not new-material smell and may indicate damp. Contact us to inspect the site, and see floor preparation.
We do not promise that. It can be reduced with timing, ventilation, a suitable product and good preparation.
