AC or pipe leaks
A small continuing leak near a wall or AC unit dampens the carpet and its base without being noticed.
Mould in carpet may seem odd in a dry city like Riyadh, but it appears when carpet stays wet after a leak, a wet clean or a damp floor. This page explains what makes carpet damp, the signs to watch for, what can be cleaned and what deserves replacing, and how to stop it coming back. We then arrange a free inspection in Riyadh and a quote by phone or WhatsApp.

Mould is a result, not a cause, so first find the source of the water. For general care, see the carpet cleaning guide.
A small continuing leak near a wall or AC unit dampens the carpet and its base without being noticed.
Cleaning carpet with heavy water or steam without proper drying leaves moisture in the lower layers.
Juice or water left for hours soaks down and becomes hard to remove.
A damp concrete floor, or one on the ground floor, pushes moisture up into the carpet; see concrete moisture check.
Closed rooms or cupboards with no airflow keep moisture trapped after any wetting.
Some underlays hold water longer and dry slowly; see floor underlay for details.
The first step when carpet gets wet is to stop the source of water, then dry it quickly. The longer moisture stays, the greater the chance of smell and mould, especially in the lower layers and underlay. We do not advise delaying drying for days, nor covering the spot with a rug or furniture to hide it.
A musty smell, dark or grey patches, a damp feel days after the surface seems dry, or peeling at the base of a wall. If anyone at home has allergies or breathing problems, consult a medical professional; we are not a source of medical advice. Our page on carpet, dust and allergies may help with general care.
Open windows, run fans and a dehumidifier if you have one, and lift furniture off the spot. A corner of the carpet can be lifted to reach the underlay, but that is best left to a fitter because lifting it wrongly damages the carpet.
If the wetting was recent and clean, and it dried fully, light cleaning and ventilation may be enough. If mould, discolouration or a lasting smell appears, surface cleaning may not be enough because the roots are in the lower layers. See carpet stain removal for surface marks.
If mould persists after drying, spreads over a wide area, or the underlay is soaked, replacement is better than repeated attempts. We lift the old carpet, check the floor, treat the cause and then fit the new carpet. See old carpet removal and carpet installation.
In rooms exposed to leaks or water, vinyl or carpet tiles may suit better because tiles are replaced piece by piece and dry faster. See carpet tiles and water-resistant flooring.
New carpet may have a light manufacturing smell that clears with ventilation, as in new carpet smell. A lasting musty smell is different and points to moisture that needs treatment.
When you contact us, say when the carpet got wet, what caused it, whether it has been dried and whether there is a smell or discolouration. Photos of the spot and of the wall or ceiling above it help us judge whether it is a leak, a damp floor or simply a one-off spill.

Covers the room in one piece, but damp in the middle may be hard to dry and need lifting.

A damaged tile can be replaced alone and the floor beneath dried.

Affected at edges and by leaks, so we consider drainage before fitting.
Turn off the water or fix the leak first.
Ventilation, fans, dehumidifier and moving furniture away.
Look at the underlay and the floor under the carpet.
By smell, colour and how deep the damp went.
Fix the leak or the floor before any new fitting.
| Situation | Likely action | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Very recent clean wetting | Dry fast and ventilate | May be enough if it dries completely |
| Light musty smell | Dry, clean and monitor | If it returns the cause is deeper |
| Visible mould or discolouration | Inspect, then usually replace | Mould lies in the lower layers |
| Ongoing leak | Fix the leak first | Before any cleaning or fitting |
The final decision depends on inspection. We do not promise a result before seeing the condition.
Check around AC units and wall bases near carpet from time to time, since small leaks start there. Do not wash carpet with lots of water or leave it wet.
When you renew a floor, check moisture first and fit a suitable underlay on ground floors and in rooms exposed to water.
To keep carpet clean see the cleaning guide and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

It traps moisture and increases mould.
Moisture seeps into the lower layers.
The smell turns into harder-to-remove mould.
Wetness and smell return after a while.
Yes, when carpet stays wet after a leak, a wash or a damp floor; the problem comes from local water, not the city’s climate.
If it is surface-level and recent it may be, but if it has reached the underlay and floor, replacement is usually better.
It varies with ventilation, how wet it got and the underlay, so we give no fixed number; the key is to dry fast and confirm the lower layers are dry.
It is decided after inspection, and with carpet tiles only the damaged part can be replaced.
Signs include smell and repeated wetting, and a floor moisture check confirms it, as on our concrete moisture page.
Usually yes because it resists water, but the floor underneath must be dry.
It can help drying after wetting and is used according to the situation.
